Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from the aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she would spend every summer with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. In this role, she launched her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
